Norway´s former king Haakon V ordered the building of the castle of Akershus in the year 1299 AD. Regardless of being damaged, rebuild, fortified and renovated during the centuries, the old walls and the central tower of this remarkable castle from the middle ages are still dominating the whole complex.
The city was rebuild within the city walls after the great fire of 1624 and the refurbishment of the castle began within the 17th. century.
The castle complex is home of the Norges Hjemmefrontsmuseum ( Museum of the resistance ) showing a affecting exposition about the time of WWII, with Norway being occupied by the armed forces of Nazi Germany at that time.
